Qatar Petroleum is taking part in the 8th Middle East Refining and Petrochemicals Conference & Exhibition (Petrotech 2012), which formally opened Monday and is ongoing until Wednesday, May 23, at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The event, which is held under the patronage of HRH Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, was inaugurated by H.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, accompanied by H.E. Dr. Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza, Minister of Energy and Chairman of the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) of Bahrain.

H.E. Sheikh Al Khalifa visited the QP stand, where he was received by H.E. Sheikh Abdullah bin Thamer Al-Thani, Qatar?s Ambassador to Bahrain, Dr. Mohammed Yousef Al-Mulla, CEO of Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO), Hussain Mohammed Al-Muftah, Assistant Manager for Downstream Business Development and Evaluation (Petrochemical) at QP, well as by the other members of the QP delegation, who presented him with a gift.

Petrotech 2012 is being held under the theme ?Creating Value: Technology, Investment & People.? Organized by Arabian Exhibition Management in cooperation with specialized parties and in coordination with NOGA, the event has attracted the participation of more than 100 companies representing over 20 countries.

This year, a program is being held to give engineering students from all over the GCC the opportunity to attend the conference, thus enabling them to interact with industry experts and to increase their knowledge in their field of study. In line with this, QP is sponsoring the participation of seven students from Qatar University at Petrotech 2012.

In line with its role as a leading player in the regional and global oil and gas industry, QP also has a strong presence as a major exhibitor at Petrotech 2012. The QP stand has attracted the interest of many delegations, visitors and students, enabling the corporation to highlight its extensive activities and operations. Over 200 delegates, industry professionals and students visited QP stand on the first day of the event, and they inquired about QP?s latest projects and the available job opportunities in the corporation.

Astellas Pharma and partner Medivation have filed their investigational prostate cancer drug enzalutamide with the US Food and Drug Administration.

A New Drug Application for enzalutamide, formerly known as MDV3100, has been submitted for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer who have received docetaxel therapy. Medivation has requested a priority review from the FDA which would mean that the agency would make a decision win six months.

Enzalutamide is an oral, once-daily agent that is an androgen receptor signaling inhibitor. In the Phase III AFFIRM trial, the treatment was well tolerated, while serious adverse events were lower in the enzalutamide group than for those on placebo.

The companies linked up in October 2009 and the deal could be worth up to $765 million to Medivation. The filing is a major boost for the latter firm, which suffered earlier this year when partner Pfizer pulled out of a pact for the Alzheimer's disease drug Dimebon (latrepirdine).

As for Astellas, US advisers recommended approval of its new bladder drug mirabegron in April and a decision is due by June 29.

In terms of investing in Romania, the years 2012 and 2013 can be easily compared to the 2006-2007 period. Back then the hype was about investments in Real Estate, now it is all about renewable energy. Although investments in Green Energy are based on real incomes and are not expected to become a bubble (as it happened for a large number of real estate investments), there are four useful lessons that we can draw from the previous Romanian ?golden investment era?.

4 mistakes of Romanian Real Estate investments in the 2007-2008 era

Aside from the inflated prices and the economic crisis that started at the end of 2008, Real Estate investors made the following four mistakes while investing in Romania:

1.?????? Only considered the (very) optimistic scenario without undertaking a serious and informed sensitivity analysis of the investment strategy.

2.?????? Did not make a careful and thorough evaluation down to the very last detail related to the investment.

3.?????? Believed that ?in Romania you can make easy money, without too much work?.

4.?????? Chose partners who were not real professionals.

In 2012 when listening to someone complain about his/her Real Estate investments in Romania, you will usually find that the investments were handled by:

The negative, the average and the positive one. I insist in asking the investors to base their decisions using the negative and average prediction of the sensitivity analysis. If you are advised to follow the positive approach you should, at least, be worried.

3. Team of professionals by your side

All successful investors in the green energy sector collaborate with professionals only. From consultants to equipment providers, investors that want to be successful need to select serious partners who will support them at every step of the investment procedure and if necessary, afterwards. Never forget the Romanian Real Estate mistake of collaborating with ?obedient, low cost amateurs? that caused huge damages to the investors.

4. Be ready for lots of work and extra effort

There are many opportunities to do lucrative business in Romania but it is also a place where you have to work hard in order to achieve your targets and this applies to investments in green energy too.

Every step during the investment process needs double-checking; the contracts require thorough verification; due diligence should not be fast; implementation might last a bit longer; operation and maintenance might cost a bit more.? This is why I always reduce the IRR that appears at my excel (but it?s still very attractive).

Overall, the winners of the Romanian ?green? race will be the ones who have a clear and well-balanced investment strategy and business plan, taking into consideration the sensitivity of the project to different market conditions.

Winning investors should use professional experts that will support them through every step of the process. It is not about being the fastest in your investment, it is about being effective and efficient in the long term

New York (CNNMoney) - House Speaker John Boehner warned Tuesday that he won't permit another increase in the debt ceiling without a larger amount of spending cuts and reforms approved in tandem.

We're sure Samsung isn't playing favorites... but after that rather extravagant product launch just the other week, it seems it's released another phone to market with barely a streamer nor slice of cake in sight. The phone in question is the SHV-E170K, and will be coming to South Korea's KT network. The handset was announced with minimal details, other than having a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD (960×540) display, LTE, 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel shooter up front. However, with a little bit of internet cunning (i.e. some discovered benchmark tests) SammyHub has determined that we're dealing with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 on top of Android 4 (TouchWiz'd by the looks of things). It should be out later this month, again, alas, potentially in its sister's shadow.

University of California, Riverside runs entire building floor off of 1.1-megawatt green battery

We're used to batteries powering a lot of devices, but the University of California, Riverside is upping that a notch by charging up a whole floor's worth. The school's Winston Chung Global Energy Center is walking the eco-friendly walk and has started using a huge bank of rare earth, lithium-ion batteries from Balqon to produce 1.1 megawatts, enough to keep Winston Chung Hall's entire first floor humming along while tapping renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. The batteries bank their energy overnight, keeping the throngs of students happy without having to recharge as much or use the regular power grid as a fallback. While it's considered a testbed, the university's giant battery is considered a blueprint for cellular towers and the green power sources themselves -- the combination of which could keep your smartphone up and running with a lot less of an environmental hit.

Panasonic sends 100,000 LEDs down Tokyo river, mates tech with tradition

If you'd been by the shore of the Sumida River in central Tokyo this past weekend, you would have noticed that it was glowing a distinct shade of blue. That's because Panasonic decided to kick off the first-ever Tokyo Hotaru (fireflies) festival by sending 100,000 EVERLED light bulbs down the river, both to mimic fireflies as well as to pay homage to a Japanese tradition of floating candles on the water. Before you cringe too much at the thought of the environmental impact, rest assured that Panasonic minimized the footprint of its aquatic LED parade. All the bulbs ran on solar power (presumably, charged during the day) that kept Evolta batteries fed inside, and the entire lot was scooped up in a large net afterwards. We love the exhibition as a large-scale demo of sustainable lighting -- you may just want to avoid fishing along the Sumida's shoreline for awhile in case you catch a straggler.
